A profusion of color descends the granulated surface of this traditional form by legendary potter Nakagawa Jinenbo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chosen Karatsu Mimitsuki Hana-ire.  The grandiose embellishment of color creates a sublime sense of tension between the dark glazed and color infusion.  Although very much in the Chosen Karatsu tradition, the execution is unequivocally contemporary.

Nakagawa Jinenbo (1953-2011) was born in Saga and was always fascinated with Karatsu ware.  He began his apprenticeship in pottery at the specialist Tea Ware Kiln of the great Inoue Toya Kyozan from the age of 24 in 1977.  He established his own climbing kiln in his hometown in 1982, specializing in Karatsu ware. From there, not satisfied with his own work skills, he went to Tanaka Sajiro for an additional apprenticeship. Since, as many Chajin artists, he concentrated on private exhibitions as an outlet for his work, shunning the world of mass competition and retail, making his work both highly valued and hard to find.  He is one of the great potters who brought his chosen form to the forefront of pottery circles and is sorely missed.
