A prime example combines the rough Shigaraki clay with the natural and beautiful markings from the Angama kiln by Kohara Yasuhiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled understatedly Chawan. The title is the only thing simple about this complex combination of contemporary clay, while boldly reflecting the tradition and spirit of old Shigaraki ware. A simply stunning work by artist.

Kohara was born in 1954 in Shigaraki, one of the six “Ancient Kiln sites” of Japan. It was not until 1983 that he would establish his own Anagama kiln , and that same year held his debut show at a major gallery. Since his pieces have been highly sought and collected throughout Japan, and the USA. Work by the artist is held in the collections of Clark Center for Japanese Art,The Art Complex Museum Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois among others.
