After six months of evaluation we have determined it to be a Crucifixion. There is a pink angel in the left corner. Late 1940's American Dutch on Paper by Willem de Kooning (1904-1997). 15" x 22". Signed by the Artist. The Paper texture is simular to Arches 90 lb cold pressed. At the bottom of this Painting, there are lines which indicate to us other drawings by de Kooning. This appears to be a requested or special order study painting for a larger stage back- drop. Please refer to de Kooning Book by Stevens and Swan pp. 226 for the Judgement Day Painting. This was for a dance backdrop. It is not in the style of his normal paintings and design. If you have any information concerning this painting please advise. We have found a Strathmore water mark in the right hand corner next to the signature. This water mark has the thistle symbol design which represents high quality paper. As per the book on de Kooning, "he admitted to a lifelong fascination with the Crucifixion" which can be found on page 379. In the photo you will notice two extra items. All three of these items were purchased from the same dealer in Charlotte, NC and they were acquired from New York when the owner was moving. What is interesting about the hand drawing named "In Memoriam", it is signed E.A.L. Our record indicates she was a old friend of de Kooning's wife named Elaine. This shows a possible connection to de Kooning. Chemical Analysis of the paint shows an average of 3 separate tests were Titanium Ti 13.4%, Potassium K .4%, and Sulfur S 1.3%.
