Erte was born as a child of the social elite, His given name is Romain de Tirtoff. Erte moved to France at the age of 18 to work in the world's foremost center of art and fashion. Beginning his career under the tutelage of Paul Poiret, the most respected couturier in Paris at the time, Erte went on to work for Harper Bazaar where he remained for twenty two years, where he created more than 240 covers for his magazine.. His reputation as a designer earned him the patronage of such notables Mata Hari, Pavlova and Mrs. William Randolph Hearst and heralded his ascension to the higher rungs of twentieth century fashion. Erte begun his work with the fine print media in the 1970's and published more than 180 of his designs through the Circle Fine Art Corporation in 1979, the Smithonian Institution organized a retrospective of his work which traveled to many major museums across the U.S. and Canada. , Chalk & Vermilion have inspired Erte, who was then in his 90's, to create some of his finest graphics. He passed away in 1990. His fine serigraphs has been collected and still collecting by many of his collectors.
