An early and very beautiful carved Mangle board, Denmark, dating 1812.

The mangle board (sometimes called mangling board or smoothing board) is one of the most time-typical and interesting objects of folk art, this old domestic implement was used to press or smooth laundry after washing.

The finest chipped and painted boards like this, was only used as wedding gifts and was decoration objects and not for practical use.

Mangle boards are more common in Scandinavia, but were produced until the later 19th. century from Alsace (France) to Russia, including the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, the British Isles.

A terrific Mangle Board carved in Oak with an archaic looking engraved horse as handle. The board itself with spectacular carved or chipped decorations - a gem.

Size: ca. 61 cm. long and quite broad.

Condition: Choice for the type and age, nice patina.

Provenance: Birgit og Bent Wolstrup Collection
