Here's a rare & complete set of 12 Ming Dynasty pottery figures each presenting a Zodiac animal from the Chinese kalender cycle.

The set consists of 6 figures in dark blue and 6 in turqoise blue, all wearing long gowns with sleeves. All figures are male and wear a headdress in the color of his gown. Pigmented colours in red, black and white. All twelve Zodiacs are represented: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.

The Chinese animal zodiac, or shengxiao (/shnng-sshyaoww/ ‘born resembling’), is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Traditionally these zodiac animals were used to date the years. In order, the 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Each year is associated with a zodiac animal. It is calculated according to Chinese lunar calendar. 2018 is the year of the Dog.

Zodiac figures are rare findings and ownly from graves of people from the high parts of society.

The figures measure 22-23 cm each.

Nearly superb condition in consideration of age and type. Beautyful glaze and only expectable losses on figures and pigment.
