Museum quality Anthropomorphic lidded bronze Lime Container, Bronze and Iron Age period, 3, Indonesia (Java, possible Lumajang, Pasiran)
This Lime container is among the best and largest known. Other specimens known are around 18-19 cm, our vessel stands 26 cm. tall and 8-9 cm. in diameter. Cylindrical body with a lid and extensive line and zig-zag decorations on the body. On the lid a large archaic head of a female with elaborate hair and large earrings.
The vessel is clearly inspired by the Vietnamese Dong Son Culture, that spread over large parts of SE Asia from 300 BC.
The function of these amusingly anthropomorphic vessels is made clear by traces of quicklime in their interiors. Along with spoons and other paraphernalia associated with the preparation of betel (areca) nuts.
Condition: Museum Quality! This particular specimen is preserved as found in pristine condition, never opened, completely covered with the original earthern green patina.
Ex. Old Swedish Private Collection, bought in the 1970s.
