A very interesting and rare larger bronze temple Elephant Bell, Indonesia, Central Java, Kadiri Period 929-1222 AD century AD.
The shape is quite peculiar for this Bell, could be architectorial, made to look like a roof of a temple - it has the almost exact shape of a 16th. cent. Italian cabasset helmet. A large and very attractive bell with a large loop at the top.
Size: ca. 15,5 cm. wide and 13,5 cm. tall.
These large bells are commonly called 'elephant bells', since they are seen in reliefs hanging on both flanks of the elaphant.
Condition: Choice! Wonderful metal and exceptional patina, with green encrusted patina, which can be removed with cleaning manually. No gong present.
Refference: See a similar bell with inscription, Jan Fontain 'The Sculpture of Indonesia' 1990, p. 75.
Ex. Old Swedish Collection, formerly in the Ban Bang Yoga Carta collection - an Indonesian professors collection, bought in the 1960s-1970s.
