Rare substantial granite stone head with neck, Pre-columbian, the Dominican Republic, Taino Culture, ca. 1000-1500 A.D.

This sculpture, likely the head of Zemi(?), is authentic and comes with a beautiful ancient patina and provenance to a reknown old German collection, read below.

A superb stone sculpture, carved in the form of a skeletal face typical of the Taino culture with a finely decorated head band and the peculiar thin neck.

Size: 20 cm. tall and as much 14 cm. wide, a massive and heavy piece, weighing ca. 4,5 kilograms.

Provenance: From an important German collection of Hermann Hemeick. The collection of 71 stone objects was collected on trips to the Dominican Republic between 1960 and 1984. The exceptional collection was documented and published by the collector and sold 2008. Comes with documentation papers and pictures of the collection from book.

Condition: Superb, a finely polished gem. Great ancient patina with corrosion and signs of the ancient 'pin-carving' technique used to create this marvelous artifact.
