A very rare and massive Assyrian cylinder seal, ca. 9th.-7th. BC.
The seal is carved in a wonderful clean white marble showing a contest scene of a four-winged hero in the centre, facing right, flanked by two mythical winged 4-legged beast, which he grasp by the forelegs.
Wonderful depiction and at the same time a very unusual and superb seal for the Neo-Assyrian period!
Size: 39 mm. tall and 22 mm. wide - massive!
Condition: Choice, high relief and some minimal corrosion with a fine imprint.
Provenance: This seal comes from an old Swedish collection, and bought at Victoria Lindströms Antiques shop in Stockholm ca. 1950. The seal comes from a much old 19th. century collection and is still mounted with the old gilt brass fitting from this collection stamped with an 'RR'. Also comes with our COA.
