An important banded Agate seal, carved re-using an ancient Mesopotamian bead in the Late Parthian-Early Sassanian period, ca. 2nd.-3rd. century AD.
Exceptional style and very sharp carving of a winged Lion and Pahlevi inscription in front, crescent above. Note that the seal stone is round and not slightly compressed - it's a re-use of a large pre-dynastic bead, Mesopotamian, 3rd. millenium BC.
The seal is massive and extremely attractive for the fine stone quality alone, but add to this the very artful and unusually fine style of the engraving and inscription.
Size: 22 mm. in diameter.
Condition: Superb, extremely crisp engraving, wonderful ancient patina to the surfaces.
