A Danish Mangle board, nicely painted with largely preserved old colours of black, red and green and the date 1837. Carved with a fine floral motif and initials of the first owner. A nice archaic horse with real horsehair as a tail. Fine well-preserved antique.
The mangle board (sometimes called mangling board or smoothing board) is one of the most time-typical and interesting objects of folk art, this old domestic implement was used to press or smooth laundry after washing.
Mangle boards are more common in Scandinavia, but were produced until the later 19th. century from Alsace (France) to Russia, including the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, the British Isles.
Size: ca. 58-59 cm. long.
Condition: Choice, with much preserved red and black painted decorations.
