A superb quality large celadon charger or dish with high relief decoration, mid 15th. century, Sawankhalok kilns Thailand for the Chinese market.

Provenance: This superb condition massive celadon charger / dish was recovered from the Royal Nanhai (AD. c.1460) shipwreck. The dating was based on carbon 14 analysis of the ships timber and by cross-referring the ceramic cargo to other datable shipwreck sites. The ship was about 28 metres long with a beam of 7-8 metres, and again of 'South China Sea' type. Hull planks and transverse bulkheads were joined with wooden dowels. Frames were fastened with bolts and nails. She was built from tropical hardwood of Hopea species. The recovered cargo from the Royal Nanhai included 20,973 pieces of green and brown glazed Celadon ceramic. The largest portion was small celadon jarlets and bowls in various shapes from the Si-Satchanalai (Sawankhalok) kilns. A small number was large dishes, some with carved decoration. Only about a fifth of the ceramic cargo was in fair condition, the majority having been much deteriorated, partly from the long submersion.

A very rare dish in this condition from this shipwreck. The dish with a fine bluish celadon glaze of very high quality with detailed overall grazing. The dish is masterly decorated with incised geomethric patters of circles, waves and lines in relief on the fan and a fluted backside and the foot left partially unglazed within the foot rim exposing the buff body turned russet red during firing. A rare large and intact piece from the Royal Nanhai cargo.

Size: ca. 28 cm. wide (max) and 8 cm. high, weighing ca. 1,3-1,4 kilograms.

Condition: Superb for size and quality, completely intact and with finely 'grazed' glaze overall. Lovely, slightly iridiscent patina! Rough looking base from sea salvage.
