A pair of strictly mueum quality German Wheel lock pistols, made for a German Prince for his personal guard, probably Saxony, late 16th. century.

The pistols are huge and at the same time very elegant with their slender form and lavishly inlaid with engraved staghorn compricing of of huntings scenes with dogs and game, and highly delicate folliage overall. Interestingly, there's different scenes of hunting on each pistol, while the folliage inlays are matching. Even the long full size barrels are also inlaids to their tips with fine inlays, as is the finely carved pear-shaped, octagonal pommels.

On the stock below the locks both are enlaid with large Crowned Coat of Arms, also in staghorn.

The locks are engraved with floral patterns and the two staged long barrels are marked on the top with Keys as makers marks and on the side with a makers mark including an animal, perhaps a bird.

Condition: Extremely fine. In truely superb condition for the type and age of the lovely pair. The metal parts have been cleaned and mainytained though the centuries and the metal quality in excellent. The stock finely preserved with typical skrinkage and light wear and patina consistent with type and period.

Made for nobility, probably for a Prince or Duke with license to use these crowned Coat of Arms. Highly interesting and we will continue to gather info on these, so feel free to make your comments.
