Rare, unusual large (16" in height x 15 inch diameter)Japanese WOOD and LACQUER DHARUMA HEAD BUDDHIST SCULPTURE. This was made as a MOLD for making large paper mache Dharuma heads. These paper mache heads were then painted red, white and black. One of the white eyes would be filled in with black by the owner of the new paper mache head, and a wish was made. When the wish came true, (assuming you didn't tell anyone what the wish was), you would then fill in the other eye with black. This was (and still is) the Japanese folkloric custom. This particular head, had a cut made in the base which was used to secure the mold to a base or table. (see enlargement #5)
There is a crack running from the left eye to the base. Otherwise, the condition is good. Wonderful colors, an unusual religious/folklore wooden/lacquer sculpture.
