Magnificent solid BRONZE casting of a common S.E. Asian theme of a young BOY playing a flute on the back of a WATER BUFFALO. There is a life-size statue of this same motif 100 meters from the Buddhist site of Borobudur in Java. Vividly modeled, with great detail in the rope and tail, the boy with a smile and wearing a kimono, this was possibly cast in Japan, which is where it was purchased, but it is not certain. Perhaps it was cast in China or elsewhere. A beautiful statue. Wonderful patina with several little "sun-like" designs on the body of the water buffalo. Height is 8.5 inches or 21.6 cms. and the width (from the nose to the tail is the same as the height. Circa: late 19th Century.
