A rare WOODEN HAND CARVED BURMESE SHAN STATE BUDDHA SEATED ON AN ELEPHANT THRONE, 19th Century, Burma, with aged matt lacquer and traces of Gold. Fine Natural formed Patina. 3 Elephants carrying this fine Buddha seated in Padmasana position with right hand in earth touching Mudra. The iconic use of the elephant throne, adopted by the Shan People and in other parts of Burma as well, beginning in the 16th Century, is believed to originate in India, where the God of Rain INDRA is depicted carried by elephants. This Buddha with a serene face has beautifully downcast eyes and a faint smile on full lips. Good overall condition, with some inconsequential signs of wear due to the considerable age. This Buddha also has a special niche in the back of the base for relics as shown in the photograph. Size: H. 16" x W. 8" at base x D. 6" (41 cm. x 21 cm. x 15 cm.). Difficult to find, a collector's piece.
