A Moche II shell bottle from Peru, ca. 100 - 200 AD. This beautifully formed and incised shell is 5" high, painted in cream over the orange clay. The delicate spout is painted with tan pigment and is nicely burnished. Bivalves, such as this scallop shell, are rare in Moche art and may have had male-female symbolism, which would have added to the fertility connotations of their association with water. Intact, with only minor losses of the cream pigment. A lovely example.
