Rare and unusual Iban pottery pattern paddle carved from durable Iron Wood (Belian wood), circa 19th century. The pattern on this would be pressed into unfired clay pots to give it this design by the Iban people of Sarawak. Beautiful pre Viet Nam War woman’s sarong from the Stieng/Xtiêng ethnic group Vietnam. Semi antique/vintage over 50 years old, all hand spun and woven. The center red and black panel is quite striking. Some minor old repairs on the selvedge and the stitches holding the panels together have unraveled in a couple of places, but otherwise no tears, holes or stains. L 135cm/53in and W: 66cm/26in.

Absolutely fabulous vintage complete, Red Yao, (aka Kiem Mien) woman’s long jacket from the Sapa area, Vietnam. There are a few holes and patches, but it’s all here, just washed and very wearable. This piece has been well worn and well loved. It is all handwoven with hand spun cotton thread with mostly indigo dye. L: 122cm/48in and W: 128cm/50 (opened at waist). There is a similar example in Jess Pourette’s “The Yao” page 101, plate 216. Circa 50 to 60 years old.

Ikat sarong from the upland Karen (Pwo or Sgaw) ethnic group in Northern Thailand. This is woven from all handspun cotton thread and natural dyes. Acquired in the 1980s, it has never been used and as such may be described as being in pristine original condtion. The cloth coming these people nowadays, are nowhere near this quality. W: 87cm/34in and L: 152cm/61in.

Genuine antique Shan lacquer box circa late 19thCE. Most Burmese lacquer being offered on the internet purported to be antique are vintage at best and new at worst. I acquired this in Yunnan, China along the Burmese border but of Shan (nationality in China). Although there is some damage the craftsmanship is exquisite which is why I put a grain of sand in a couple of the images to put the work into perspective. Personally I prefer Shan lacquer more than Burmese because the designs tend to...

Unusual collection of 6 old “prayer cloths” from a Taoist Master’s ceremonial robe (see 8th enlargement). These are from Vietnam where the Yao are referred to as the Mien and are circa 50 to 60 years old- woven from handspun cotton. They all have the same basic pattern indicating they are probably from the same priest’s outfit. These used to be quite easy to get about 20 years ago but now almost impossible to find. Dimensions- the largest one is 18cm/7.1in x 18cm/7.1in and th...

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from nettle fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics. Th...

Good Amfoang, West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region. No damage, some light fading may be noted in the reddish areas of the firs...
