Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp.Circa 60 to 100 years old. Rare Zo/Tedem blanket. The Tedum aka Tiddim are a subgroup of the Chin, who live in Northern Burma, Chin State, bordering India. This piece is circa 1950-1960, spun from commercial, hand dyed cotton thread with some single faced supplementary and diamond twill patterns. Antique portable spinning wheel from Chiang Mai area Northern Thailand. Nice functional old piece with classic Thai carved motifs on the support arms and spokes. Very fine old wool pangden cloth- all hand spun wool and natural dyes. This piece is an exceptionally large piece consisting of 5 panels, circa 40 to 50 years old. I have had quite a few of these in the past and this is one of best I have seen.The weave is very tight and heavy and would make an excellent small blanket or throw rug. Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who personanallu acquired it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it. Womenâ€™s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This is one single panel which would have used to make three other skirts. Ikat sarong from the upland Karen (Pwo or Sgaw) ethnic group in Northern Thailand. This is woven from all handspun cotton thread and natural dyes. Acquired in the 1980s, it has never been used and as such may be described as being in pristine original condition. The cloth coming these people nowadays, are nowhere near this quality. Beautiful old classic Lao shoulder clothe, all natural dyes with hand spun silk threads. I picked this up on my first trip to Laos in the mid 1990s, at the Talat Sao Market, Vientiane and would date this to the 1970/80s. The fabric is incredibly soft and supple and may be worn (it is amazingly warm) as a scarf or hung as wall art. Old Timorese hard wood statue commemorating a departed loved one. These were kept in the â€śatticâ€ť of a home and were not meant to be free standing. I bought this from an old Australian collection which was collected in the 1980s in West Timor, so this dates 1950â€™s to 1960s. This carved from hard wood in good condition with minor checks in the wood. H: 26/9.8in and W: 7cm/2.8in.

Beautiful pre Viet Nam War womanâ€™s sarong from the Stieng/XtiĂŞng ethnic group Vietnam. Semi antique/vintage over 50 years old, all hand spun and woven. The center red and black panel is quite striking. Some minor old repairs on the selvedge and the stitches holding the panels together have unraveled in a couple of places, but otherwise no tears, holes or stains. L 135cm/53in and W: 66cm/26in.

Absolutely fabulous vintage complete, Red Yao, (aka Kiem Mien) womanâ€™s long jacket from the Sapa area, Vietnam. There are a few holes and patches, but itâ€™s all here, just washed and very wearable. This piece has been well worn and well loved. It is all handwoven with hand spun cotton thread with mostly indigo dye. L: 122cm/48in and W: 128cm/50 (opened at waist). There is a similar example in Jess Pouretteâ€™s â€śThe Yaoâ€ť page 101, plate 216. Circa 50 to 60 years old.
