Very rare man’s ceremonial tunic from the Chin ethnic group, probably Falam Township, Chin State Myanmar. I would consider this an antique heirloom blanket between 1910-1940 finely woven from hand spun cotton thread and natural dyes. This incorporates the classic Chin diamond twill weft pattern as well as double side embroidery. This still has traces of the original and embroidery portions of the selvedge side are missing (I am guessing approx 15cm/6in) - W: 128cm/50.5in and L; 1...

Beautiful women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is in perfect condition and dates to 1960 to 1970. The center panel is stitched loosely at the top as it was meant to be used as a pocket. Google Bahnar Bob Mc Kerrow to view photos of women wearing this kind o...

Complete set of “machete”, scabbard and small “piru” carving knives from the nomadic Penan/Punan people of Sarawak. I bought this from a villager at a Penan “reservation” Batu Bungan outside of Gunung Mulu Park. Although the side scabbard is made of vinyl stitched on with monofilament fishing line the technique for making the blades are completely traditional. May be in the last enlargement the parang blade has a slight curve and is beveled on one side only which is for...

Very old (over 50 years) which is ancient by Burmese lacquer standards. This was possibly made by the Shan who favored dramatic geometric designs over the more figural Burman style. This has some fritting on the lacquer. H: 24cm/9.5in D: 18cm/7.1in.

Quirky “chief’s” stool carved out very heavy Belian Iron Wood, from an Ibanic group. This is one solid piece except for the legs which have been inserted like dowels. The wood has a nice smooth patina although I don’t think it is very old- I bought it Kuching, Sarawak about 15 years ago. L: 99cm/39in and W: 34cm/13.5in. Iron wood is quite valuable these days, excellent condition with no cracks or checks.

Nice old Thai sticky rice “lunch box” in Lanna or Issan style. This is about 30 or 40 tears old with typical double wall construction. There are areas that have been lovingly repaired with some nylon cord. To the purist this may be seen as a distraction but I see time and an ethic where nothing was ever wasted- this was a valued very personal object. Next to it I have placed a contemporary one. Nowadays even this would be considered disposable; when you travel in the Thai count...

Good Kayan Orang Ulu gawai rice festival ceremonial mask, circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. This mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. Used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest. H: 25cm/9.8in and W: 16cm/6.2in.

Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way. The embroidery is single side floating weft while ...

Aside from tiny amounts of commercially dyed thread used on the borders as highlights this piece is made of all hand spun treads and natural dyes. It is quite a durable weave with denim like feel....

Pair of unique and eclectic Shan lacquer images, from Thai/Burmese border. These are used for grinding down to make medicine or magic potions. The larger one is molded of compressed powder (the head has been broken off and glued back on) and unused circa 50 years old, the smaller one is hand carved from what looks to be a root and is circa 100 years old.
