Rare antique bear’s teeth used by the Yao/Mien ethnic group in Guangxi Zhuang, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos during in Daoist ceremonies by Dao Guang priests. These would have had bells attached to them were used to “call in the spirits”. An example may be seen in Jess Pourret’s book: The Yao, plate 570, pg 207. These are all very old, and not from a bile farm (in case you were wondering). Dimensions in enlargements

Elegant ebony wood carving of a Balinese beauty circa 1960 to 1970- possibly older. This was obviously created for the tourist market and panders to the Western ideal of the female form of the time. I traveled to Bali in the 80s and 90s and found their arts and crafts leaning more to the impressionist side, where figures looked like the Navi from Avatar. Given its hardness and cost, ebony is usually only given to master craftsman to carve from. I tried digging into the bottom with my trus...

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior. I had the goo...

Fine and rare four paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people, Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are polyester and commercial white thread while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo. There is some minor even fraying at the bottom and a few negligible small holes. W: 124cm/49in and H: ...

Pair of “opium scales” from Laos, these came from Luang Prabang but were used through much of Southeast Asia. Most likely these were used in everyday trading whether it was pork meat to big chunks of opium and are quite simple with lead applied to one end as a counterweight and the scale being measured in hash marks along the sides. The opposite ends have been inlaid with small rectangular pieces of a darker wood (possibly buffalo horn?), a subtle but attractive decoration. Some wear as t...

Rare (one of a kind), semi antique basket from the Naxi/Nakhi ethnic group in Yunnan province. I purchased this in 2001 at a local market in Lijiang (now a UNESCO heritage site). Constructed of bamboo with much of lacquer intact, this piece is circa 50 to 80 years old, most interesting is an auspicious coin symbol woven into the top. This kind of thing always reminds of the labor intensiveness that is put in to decorating such a humble object. I have traveled to Yunnan several times since ...

Fine and rare antique Bouyi, Buyi three paneled wedding blanket with supplementary weft silk embroidered pattern. Except for the purple aniline silk thread the dyes on this piece are natural; the blanket foundation is made of a bast fiber weft (hemp or ramie) and handspun cotton warp. There is some loss to the cream colored silk thread but having said this, it is in excellent condition for late 19th to early 20th century textile from Southern China and thoughtfully woven- please note how ...

Rare semi antique supplementary warp silk embroidery on handspun indigo cotton, blanket from the diverse Tai ethnic group Vietnam/Laos. I collected this in Chiang Mai around 12 years ago and would date it around 40 to 80 years old. Nowadays you just can’t find this sort of textile anymore. Some embroidery losses and a hole along the edge (noted in enlargements) but overall in very good condition. Dimensions: 84cm/33in x 145cm/57in.

Unusual dated woman’s sarong from Burma. This is hand loomed with a dancing girl motif, 1974 date (coincides with the forming of Burma’s 2nd constitution under Ne Win) and traditional Burmese pattern. It appears to be made of a combination of silk and synthetic fiber- the yellow threads are silk while the rest are “something else”. Possibly part of a dance troupe costume for a commemorative performance, interesting piece, the only dated one I have ever seen. There are s...

Very rare woman’s tube skirt from Taliang ethnic group in Attapeu province Laos. Please note in the 3rd enlargement is the image of helicopter dating back to the CIA covert “Air America” operation Laos from 1955 to 1974. Similar to the Afghan "war rugs” made during the Soviet occupation, the simpler folk amongst us documented current events in their weavings. I traveled through this province back 2002 and did not find one single piece dating from this period although I di...

Antique portable spinning wheel from Chiang Mai area Northern Thailand. Nice functional old piece with classic Thai carved motifs on the support arms and spokes. This is from a village so it has been repaired as needed over the years using various bits. The handle is missing and the there is some damage to the carving in enlargement 4. This will pack flat (relatively) and is early 20th century. W: 67cm/26.3 and H: 47cm/18.5in

Old (100 years or more) leather belt from Tibet with 5 damascened silver patterns on iron fittings with complete buckle. There is some rust on the metal bits, maybe some Silvo polish on them will bring some of the shine back to the silver. All the pieces seem to be here except for a scabbard attachment. Total L: 118cm/46.5in. I bought this the Barkor bazaar in front of the Jokang in Lhasa almost 20 years ago; the leather is rough but serviceable.
