Exceptionally rare small storage jar with typical Burmese style floral scrolls under a green tin based glaze. Probably originally from the Mon, Pegu (Bago) kiln. Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who had personally bought it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it, so this can be credibly dated to around 1960/1950. Women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This is one single panel which would have used to make three other skirts.
