Exceptionally rare, grey pottery, recumbent tiger, circa Han Dynasty. So far this is the only one I have ever seen, outside of a book. This piece is in excellent condition, no damage with traces of original white pigments. Rather than a depicting the tiger as some ferocious predator it portrays it with a friendly expression. L: 25cm/9.8in and W: (midpoint) 8cm/3.1in.

Quirky miniature alter piece from a Chinese ethnic minority. This sourced in Yunnan in the late 1980s, and the item itself is circa 19th century. I am inclined to say this is a Miao/Hmong or Yao/Mien item. This intricately carved as a small table with a key fret pattern and “dou” shaped vessel with animal feet and lotus leaf pattern on top. A “dou” is used for holding ceremonial offerings to a deity or heaven in Chinese culture. The lid is missing and its true function is el...

Old hand carved wooden ink pad box circa first half 20th century. I think this is probably a Yao item, but as I purchased it in a Bai ethnic minority market in Yunnan, almost 20 years ago, we’ll assume it is Bai. This has a floral pattern carved on the lid. The ink has long ago dried up. Nice natural patina. L: 7.2cm/2.9in x W: 5.8cm/2.3in x H: 3.2cm/1.3in.

Interesting old Burmese/Shan hand written book on handmade Saa (mulberry pulp paper). There are 12 pages between the covers- most of these books are usually related to either Buddhist studies or shaman rituals, but as I can’t find anyone who can read this it is being sold as a fine example of calligraphy. All the materials are handmade from the string binding the pages together to the charcoal ink. In this day of ideas being conveyed on a keyboard, back then one really had to think...

Rare two paneled wedding blanket from the Bouyi (aka Buyi) ethnic group in Changshun area Guizou, China. Woven from all handspun cotton thread. The blue and white center field has a “wanzi” swastika meander pattern while the upper and lower parts are the repetitive “well” symbols. If you stare at this piece long enough you will find a few small holes but nothing really significant, of the few pieces I have ever seen from this specific group, this is the best. This dates cir...
