Rare antique two paneled bed cover from the Daizu ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China, only the second in this style of weaving from this group I have ever seen. An unusual piece with very fine silk embroidery and woven field with what may be hemp/ramie handspun threads, as it has a slightly rougher feel than standard cotton thread. I would date this circa early late 19th/20th century with natural dyes. There are small holes and tears throughout the piece as to be expected in ...

Excellent, circa 1950s, 3 paneled weaving from the Zhuang ethnic group in Guangxi Zhuang, Southern China. The body is woven from very fine handmade cotton thread while the weft supplementary embroidery is done with silk floss threads (the small blue indigo medallions are done with cotton). Quite a heavy piece because of all the embroidery. L: 161cm/63in and W: 100cm/39in.

Very rare early 20th century textile from the Mulao ethnic group Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Province. Little is known about these textiles other than they show a close affinity with Maonan weavings and are no longer being woven by this people. This is a two paneled blanket with original border and supplementary weft silk and cotton embroidered pattern of birds, mythical animals and flowers on a cotton field “key fret” pattern. Good condition given its age- there are some patches...

Rare high fired Qingbai bottle with original lid, there was one blob of glaze on the side which I have covered with gold leaf (if you can’t hide- decorate). If one were patient enough you could probably polish it down to reveal a green glass like area. There is one tiny chip on the bottom of lid otherwise no damage. Circa Song or Yuan Dynasty. H: 6cm/10.2in and D: 14cm/5.5in.

Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way. The embroidery is single side floating weft while ...

Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp but the tip is broken. Circa 60 to 100 years old. I am alwa...
