Complete set of “machete”, scabbard and small “piru” carving knives from the nomadic Penan/Punan people of Sarawak. I bought this from a villager at a Penan “reservation” Batu Bungan outside of Gunung Mulu Park. Although the side scabbard is made of vinyl stitched on with monofilament fishing line the technique for making the blades are completely traditional. May be in the last enlargement the parang blade has a slight curve and is beveled on one side only which is for...

Old Chinese stone ware bottle. This shape is fairly generic and could date anywhere from Jin Dynasty to Ming, so I am taking the middle road and attributing it as Yuan. The mouth is chipped but it has a nice shape, note my photo editing software tend to truncate images, so this piece is more elegant in real life than the photos indicate. The glaze has traces of a paraffin patina. H: 24cm/9.5in and D: 18cm/7in.

Very rare man’s ceremonial tunic from the Chin ethnic group, probably Falam Township, Chin State Myanmar. I would consider this an antique heirloom blanket between 1910-1940 finely woven from hand spun cotton thread and natural dyes. This incorporates the classic Chin diamond twill weft pattern as well as double side embroidery. This still has traces of the original and embroidery portions of the selvedge side are missing (I am guessing approx 15cm/6in) - W: 128cm/50.5in and L; 1...

Fine embroidered patch possibly from an old Chinese baby hat or one of the many Miao groups but to be honest I am not sure. The pattern seems more abstract than a typical Chinese piece with crimped metal alloy decorations. Circa 60 to 90 years old with very intricate and detailed stitching- minor losses to some of the metal bits. Free shipping via Hong Kong Registered Airmail. L: 17.5cm/7in and W: 14cm/5.5in.

Antique Chinese “lucky charm” with a bat holding a sign (almost like a Chinese pawn shop), the side in enlargement one means to have success getting a job in the civil service and the other side translates “Amitabha” Buddha. This is circa Qing Dynasty and high quality silver with very detailed workmanship especially with stippling in the chasing. The silver is tarnished but will...

Rare meditation sitting rug, constructed with cotton warp and wool weft, this piece was most likely woven in Khotan, Xinjiang and dates at least to the middle 19th century. The wool pile is pretty much worn down to nothing except for the darker brown part that has a stylized “lotus” medallion in the center and border. I bought this the Barkor bazaar in Lhasa over 20 years ago and the side still has traces of felt where another wool border would have been sewn on in the trad...

Old (100 years or more) leather belt from Tibet with 5 damascened silver patterns on iron fittings with complete buckle. There is some rust on the metal bits, maybe some Silvo polish on them will bring some of the shine back to the silver. All the pieces seem to be here except for a scabbard attachment. Total L: 118cm/46.5in. I bought this the Barkor bazaar in front of the Jokang in Lhasa almost 20 years ago; the leather is rough but serviceable.

Very rare woman’s tube skirt from Taliang ethnic group in Attapeu province Laos. Please note in the 3rd enlargement is the image of helicopter dating back to the CIA covert “Air America” operation Laos from 1955 to 1974. Similar to the Afghan "war rugs” made during the Soviet occupation, the simpler folk amongst us documented current events in their weavings. I traveled through this province back 2002 and did not find one single piece dating from this period although I di...

Unusual dated woman’s sarong from Burma. This is hand loomed with a dancing girl motif, 1974 date (coincides with the forming of Burma’s 2nd constitution under Ne Win) and traditional Burmese pattern. It appears to be made of a combination of silk and synthetic fiber- the yellow threads are silk while the rest are “something else”. Possibly part of a dance troupe costume for a commemorative performance, interesting piece, the only dated one I have ever seen. There are s...

Fine and rare old Yao/Mien all hand spun and woven cotton wedding veil with silk thread embroidered geometrical design, circa 50 years old. Rare semi antique supplementary warp silk embroidery on handspun indigo cotton, blanket from the diverse Tai ethnic group Vietnam/Laos. I collected this in Chiang Mai around 12 years ago and would date it around 40 to 80 years old. Nowadays you just can’t find this sort of textile anymore. Some embroidery losses and a hole along the edge (noted in enlargements) but overall in very good condition. Dimensions: 84cm/33in x 145cm/57in.

Good West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered fanciful animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region. No damage, some light fading may be noted in the reddish areas of the first enlarg...

Genuine antique Shan lacquer box circa late 19thCE. Most Burmese lacquer being offered on the internet purported to be antique are vintage at best and new at worst. I acquired this in Yunnan, China along the Burmese border but of Shan (nationality in China). Although there is some damage the craftsmanship is exquisite which is why I put a grain of sand in a couple of the images to put the work into perspective. Personally I prefer Shan lacquer more than Burmese because the designs tend to...

Fine and rare antique Bouyi, Buyi three paneled wedding blanket with supplementary weft silk embroidered pattern. Except for the purple aniline silk thread the dyes on this piece are natural; the blanket foundation is made of a bast fiber weft (hemp or ramie) and handspun cotton warp. Rare (one of a kind), semi antique basket from the Naxi/Nakhi ethnic group in Yunnan province. I purchased this in 2001 at a local market in Lijiang (now a UNESCO heritage site). Constructed of bamboo with much of lacquer intact, this piece is circa 50 to 80 years old, most interesting is an auspicious coin symbol woven into the top. This kind of thing always reminds of the labor intensiveness that is put in to decorating such a humble object. I have traveled to Yunnan several times since ...

Quirky glass ring emulating agate. This piece came from China but possibly is a trade object. I acquired this in a lot of other ancient pieces. Pair of “opium scales” from Laos, these came from Luang Prabang but were used through much of Southeast Asia. Most likely these were used in everyday trading whether it was pork meat to big chunks of opium and are quite simple with lead applied to one end as a counterweight and the scale being measured in hash marks along the sides. The opposite ends have been inlaid with small rectangular pieces of a darker wood (possibly buffalo horn?), a subtle but attractive decoration. Some wear as t...

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior. I had the goo...
