Fine and rare four paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people, Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are polyester and commercial white thread while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo. There is some minor even fraying at the bottom and a few negligible small holes. W: 124cm/49in and H: ...

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior. I had the goo...

Elegant ebony wood carving of a Balinese beauty circa 1960 to 1970- possibly older. This was obviously created for the tourist market and panders to the Western ideal of the female form of the time. I traveled to Bali in the 80s and 90s and found their arts and crafts leaning more to the impressionist side, where figures looked like the Navi from Avatar. Given its hardness and cost, ebony is usually only given to master craftsman to carve from. I tried digging into the bottom with my trus...

Good small copper alloy Buddha from Japan, circa post WW II, 1950s. This probably was meant to be in a small portable shrine. The body was cast separate from the nimbus- there is a slight crimp on one side which may be noted as an irregular edge in enlargements. This was made in the typical Chinese Tang style, a good example of how Japan assimilated and refined foreign cultural influences. H: 9cm/3.5in.

Rare “Phra Ha Roi” (literally 500 Buddhas but in practice means a lot of tiny images) late Haripunchai, terra cotta votive fragment. This piece dates to the late period circa 12th-13th CE from the last remaining Mon city state in what is now Thailand that was eventually conquered and assimilated into the Northern Thai Lanna Kingdom. Worn surface- as to be expected from an excavated pottery object and comes with a museum quality Perspex stand. H: 10cm/4in x W: 10cm/4in.

Unique clear glass Sino Tibetan image of a Dakini, most likely cast from a mold. Basically even with the usual clay images it is problematic dating them as the molds may be old but the item recently made, this piece has traces of compacted soil, surface pitting and wear, as well as small Ming Dynasty Buddhist and Taoist clear glass charms having been documented, I feel a circa 100 year plus is a conservative dating. Having circumambulated the Jokhang on many occasions mainly to check out the B...

Luscious all hand spun and woven with gold threads, panel from a vintage Varanasi, Indian wedding sari, circa 60 to 70 years old. I would describe the colors as pigeon blood ruby red with subtle gentian floral scrolls intermingled with the gold thread medallions, which I might add is made of genuine low karat gold metal. This is double backed on cotton and silk with a “raw” silk border and polyester end trims. There are a few threadbare areas but with the silk backing they a...

Bronze Khmer, Baphuon period style image of Ganseh,- contemporary. There has been some repair to the base. Authentic Khmer bronzes usually have ceramic cores with traces of stucco and earth inside the base. Having said this it is a credible reproduction with an "of the period" style and patina. H: 6.5cm/2.6in.

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from hemp fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics. The Rawang...

Fine and rare classical old Cambodian silk lower garment, approximately 60 to 90 years old. This piece may be worn either by men or women. It was originally sewn together and stepped into like a sarong skirt however it was given one fold in the front and then twisted from the bottom and pulled between the legs and tucked in the front and secured to the waist with a silk sash or belt to form a pantaloon type garment The frog pattern is very rare and the only one of I have yet to see.
