Delightful bamboo fly whisk handle pendant from the Hani (Akha) minority, Yunnan. China. Great patina with intricate designs consisting of double dorjes, various flowers and seal script Chinese characters- the silver band at the top is new and the piece is circa 90 -110 years old. I put a Thai Bronze Age crystal bead (1500- 2000 years old) at the top and this is strung on an adjustable cord. Length of the handle is 10.3cm/4in...

Rare antique two paneled bed cover from the Daizu ethnic minority of Southern Yunnan, China, only the second in this style of weaving from this group I have ever seen. An unusual piece with very fine silk embroidery and woven field with what may be hemp/ramie handspun threads, as it has a slightly rougher feel than standard cotton thread. I would date this circa early late 19th/20th century with natural dyes...

Very rare early 20th century textile from the Mulao ethnic group Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Province. Little is known about these textiles other than they show a close affinity with Maonan weavings and are no longer being woven by this people. This is a two paneled blanket with original border and supplementary weft silk and cotton embroidered pattern of birds, mythical animals and flowers on a cotton field “key fret” pattern...

Rare high fired Qingbai bottle with original lid, there was one blob of glaze on the side which I have covered with gold leaf (if you can’t hide- decorate). If one were patient enough you could probably polish it down to reveal a green glass like area. There is one tiny chip on the bottom of lid otherwise no damage. Circa Song or Yuan Dynasty. H: 6cm/10.2in and D: 14cm/5.5in.

Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp but the tip is broken. Good Jizhou glazed jar from a Jiangxi kiln with lid circa Southern Song Dynasty. Please note that the lid and body are slightly different as the lid’s glaze lacks the craclature of the body with more of “tea dust” type glaze. Possibly from the same kiln- “matched but not married”. Having said this they look good together and unless closely scrutinized its hard to notice...

Unusual lacquered line marker used by either masons or carpenters from Yunnan, China along the Lao border. Carved in the shape of a mythical Qiling beast, the powder (which appears to be a mixture of graphite and coal dust) holder is made from a bamboo section. There is small piece broken off the hexagonal chrysanthemum spool but is in over all good condition for an antique, still functioning artisan’s tool circa. 19th CE. L: 13cm/5in and W: 7cm/2.8in.

Ensemble of shards of classic Song Dynasty stoneware Guan yao and Ding yao pieces. The Ding is particularly nice with intact foot rim and lovely remnants of impressions. Lovely gray pottery head of a smiling woman from the Han Dynasty, Sichuan province. Early funerary art from Sichuan is quite distinct from the Han from the Central Plains of Shaanxi. In general Han Sichuan images show more emotion in their expressions and are far less abstract. Prior to their assimilation during the Qin Dynasty, Sichuan was composed of ethnically and politically separate non Han cultures...

Large circa Jin Cizhou type bowl with dark olive colored “teadust” glaze, there is a strong possibility that this was fired at the Yaozhou kiln. There is some soil accretion on the side but this can cleaned off, there was on small chip and hairline crack but I stabilized the crack where you can hardly notice and filled the chip and touched up with gold leaf noted in last enlargement. Tang to possibly Five Dynasties, stoneware jar with light olive green glaze and reddish clay body. The foot is rimless and concave. There is a “Jun” type glaze run on the body noted in enlargements- probably unintentional but interesting nonetheless. One of a kind, stoneware amphora with brown and black inner glaze, circa 11th century Jin Dynasty. Two rare Burmese/Shan small betel containers, 60 to 100 years old with “ku-nan kan byat” patterns and original inner trays. Genuine antique Burmese lacquer is almost impossible to find these days; I picked the larger one up in a small shop Luang Prabang, Laos in 1998. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and W: 10.2cm/4in, and the smaller one, H: 6.7cm/2.7in and D: 7.7cm/3in, in Chiang Mai this year. These have some old repairs, as well as a pleasing craclature typical of antique Burmese lacquer.

A collection of 3 green glazed “kiln wasters” from an unknown Burmese kiln, I acquired these on recent trip to Thailand- the dealer, who I might add is extremely knowledgeable on Southeast Asian ceramics, said they were found in Burma and not from the Tak Hilltop Burial site, where all the Burmese ceramics I have seen have come from. Warped and damaged- what you see is what you get quite decorative as a set. I would date these 14th to 16th centuries...

Eighteen bead strand of quartz crystal. These were excavated from the Tak Hilltop Burial Site in along the Thai Burmese border, and can be dated at least to the 14th century due to the ceramics found in the same strata. I am however of the opinion these are much earlier probably at least 1500 years old or more as similar pieces are found in the Neolithic/Bronze Age Lopburi Sites. These are strung on an expandable elastic string with an interior circumference of 17cm/6.8in...

Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 10 years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist fundamental of Anicca: the impermanence of all things).
