Fine old Shan Burmese lacquer box, circa early 20th century with one tray and depicting monkeys playing in foliate background. This piece is a real classic beauty (IMHO). Large pale green glazed plate with incised decoration, most likely from the Thantwe kiln near present day Rangoon, Burma. Excavated from the Tak Burial site near, Mae Sot along the Thai/Burmese border. This can be reliably dated to least 14th/16th centuries due to other known and datable ceramics from China and Thailand that were found in the same strata...

Finely detailed carved bamboo bitong with five panels depicting classic three friends of winter and scholar themes. I bought this in Guangxi Zhuang, China in the 1995, so a 1950 to 1960 a (possibly Republic) dating seems reasonable. There is a hole intentionally drilled at the bottom, otherwise excellent condition. H: 13.4cm/5.2in and D: 6.8cm/2.8in.

Exceptionally rare, fine large Cizhou ware black glazed bowl with hare’s fur marking and russet splashes circa Jin/Yuan Dynasty. This is from a Henan kiln- the unusual brown clay and cutting of the foot is similar to Jun Wares in the National Palace Museum, Taipei- dated to the Yuan Dynasty. The body is very thin compared to others from this genre with an excellent high iron content patina. D: 17.7cm/7in and H: 7.3cm/2.9in. The pictures do no...

Fine and rare 19th century, 2 paneled, ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Southern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals. This is unique, in being woven with nettle fiber rather than cotton. The weaving is quite delicate and complicated; I put a single grain of rice to highlight the intricate and minute details of the blue and red alternating points. The bells come mainly from India and have a very sweet sound...

Extremely rare matched pair of large (possibly one of a kind), Liao Dynasty, greenish brown (khaki) glazed Gangwa ware jars from the Chifeng Kiln, Inner Mongolia. The Liao were a non Han culture that ruled in Manchuria and parts of Mongolia 907-1125 CE. This shape is fairly unique to Liao ceramics as it seeks to emulate Turkic West Asian metal work drinking vessels...

Stunning bronze sword handle from the Dian Kingdom that paralleled the Han Dynasty. Judging from the heavy triangular pommels and spikes near the blade, these were designed for close quarter combat that would look right at home in a fight scene out of Game of Thrones. This has a classic azurite patina with traces of the original iron blades...

Fine and rare molded leather tobacco box from the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan, China. These were purchased in rural Yunnan at a Bai market, near Dali about 15 years ago. I have found a few references on Bai lacquer but never any images, so this may have been made by either the Shan(Dai) or Yi minorities who have a better documented lacquer tradition...
