Rare Western Han ink carved gray sandstone inkstone. During the Han ink was made of pellets or granules rather the sticks and this would have been used to grind these directly on the stone to make ink. Fine and rare “sizhi” (four straight sides) inkstone circa Qing Dynasty with footrim. This is a very conservative dating based on a similar example of an inkstone with a footrim in Chinese Inkstones by Simon Kwan pgs. 278 & 279. Good 18 seal script characters “chop” circa early 20th century. I wish I could give a more detailed translation other than it being for an association but it is, for the moment, the best I can do. Very skillfully carved with a few chips on one corner, please note the scale is centimeters.
