Unusual stone carving of the Dharmapala- Mahakala manifested as Gugyi Gompo- the protector of the tent. This piece was sourced in Qinghai Province (formerly known as Amdo), China about 20 years ago and is circa 18th to 19th Century, but most likely is of Nepali origin. H: 16cm/6.5in and W: 7.8cm/3.1in (not including stand). There are remnants of a “peg” carved beneath the plinth indicating this was part of a temple ensemble rather then a personal votive image.

Stunning wooden statue of a court official or Taoist deity circa Ming Dynasty. He has a fierce countenance and although small has an imposing presence. Please examine images carefully; this has some fire damage as well as damage to arms. There is some compacted soil under the legs as well as having an unusually light weight which leads me to think this an excavated piece. There are traces of white gesso primer as well as small areas of green and red original pigment...

Lovely, circa 18th century wood statue of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy seated on a lotus leaf and buds. There is one stem broken on the left bud and the backing plug on the consecration niche is missing. This has the original dedication but it is unreadable. Most likely from Southern China it has traces of the original gilt and lacquer. These have become quite scarce these days due to domestic demand in China, this piece was lucky find coming from an Australian collection...

Very rare, large early Ming Buddha (or earlier) this piece has been in my personal collection for about 15 years, it had belonged to another private collector 10 years prior. The small mouth and expressive face seems to set this as being earlier than Ming, so this is a conservative dating...

Rare, circa early 20th century carved wooden mask designed to be placed on or above a door to ward off evil spirits. This was probably made by a minority ethnic group such as the Miao or Tujia and is similar in style to Nuo masks although this was never meant to be worn. H: 33cm/13in and W: 24cm/9.4in. This is large impressive piece with a fierce demeanor.

Rare example of early Chinese Buddhist art from the Northern Qi Dynasty, 550-577CE. This is a stone frieze fragment depicting a seated Buddha with one hand resting palm down and the other the palm out. The lowered “palm out- fingers down” mudra is a significant key to identifying this piece as it was a quite common iconographical feature during the Northern Dynasties but less so during the Tang...

Terra Cotta Buddha head and torso from Tov Aimag, Northern Mongolia. This region had an abundance Yellow Hat sect Tibetan temples, most of which were demolished when it became the world’s second Communist country in 1924. Soon after a mass Soviet style pogrom of the Buddhist monastic order was carried out. Taking a page from Uncle Joe's book the Chinese did much the same to the monasteries in Tibet during the Cultural Revolution...
