Fine and rare classical old Cambodian silk lower garment, approximately 60 to 90 years old. This piece may be worn either by men or women. It was originally sewn together and stepped into like a sarong skirt however it was given one fold in the front and then twisted from the bottom and pulled between the legs and tucked in the front and secured to the waist with a silk sash or belt to form a pantaloon type garment The frog pattern is very rare and the only one of I have yet to see...

Genuine antique Shan lacquer box circa late 19thCE. Most Burmese lacquer being offered on the internet purported to be antique are vintage at best and new at worst. I acquired this in Yunnan, China along the Burmese border but of Shan (nationality in China). Although there is some damage the craftsmanship is exquisite which is why I put a grain of sand in a couple of the images to put the work into perspective...

Nice old red and black lacquered Cambodian Siri (betel) box container with foliate scroll pattern incised on the surface. Minor lacquer losses and restoration consistent with an antique piece. The art of Cambodian lacquer production has had a minor renaissance in recent years but this mainly done for the decorative art export market, items made for local village use this has pretty much died out after Khmer Rouge Era and advent of cheap Chinese plastic boxes...

Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 10 years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist fundamental of Anicca: the impermanence of all things). The head has been reattached. The base is hollow: the only example I have ever seen with this. H: 27cm/10.6in and W: 11cm/4.2in.

Eighteen bead strand of quartz crystal. These were excavated from the Tak Hilltop Burial Site in along the Thai Burmese border, and can be dated at least to the 14th century due to the ceramics found in the same strata. I am however of the opinion these are much earlier probably at least 1500 years old or more as similar pieces are found in the Neolithic/Bronze Age Lopburi Sites. These are strung on an expandable elastic string with an interior circumference of 17cm/6.8in...

Two rare Burmese/Shan small betel containers, 60 to 100 years old with “ku-nan kan byat” patterns and original inner trays. Genuine antique Burmese lacquer is almost impossible to find these days; I picked the larger one up in a small shop Luang Prabang, Laos in 1998. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and W: 10.2cm/4in, and the smaller one, H: 6.7cm/2.7in and D: 7.7cm/3in, in Chiang Mai this year. These have some old repairs, as well as a pleasing craclature typical of antique Burmese lacquer.

Unique Lanna Thai excavated gray terra cotta pipe bowl from Chiang Mai, in the shape of an elephant’s head. Clay pipes are fairly ubiquitous archeological artifacts found throughout much of the “Golden Triangle” and have been dated as far back as 12thCE Pagan, Burma. I can find no references of them being produced by any of the well documented Thai kiln sites, so in way these are quite enigmatic in that they seem to be everywhere but know one knows where they are from...
