Fine old rattan/bamboo splitting knife used in basket making. This has a great natural patina on the handle with decorated “butt”, circa first half 20th century. The blade still carries a sharp edge and is still quite serviceable. L: 44cm/17.2in (blade is 11cm/4.2cm). Excellent condition.

Rare antique large Thai “parang”, used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps. The handle is made of old, and nowadays rare, Thai Rosewood: Dalbergia cochinchinensis and the iron blade is quite heavy and robust. The cutting edge is still sharp and usable, there are a couple of splits which is secured by a metal band. L: 64cm/25.2in.

Very rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp but the tip is broken. Circa 60 to 100 years old...
