Pair of rare all rattan hand woven Rawang baskets from the Putao area of Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. Oldish, circa 50 years old in good condition (the small one has a missing loop), still pliable and not brittle. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Also it is interesting to note that the men do the weaving and with advent of plastic bags this pretty much a extinct craft...

Old Chin skirt, circa 1950, from the Khumi subgroup in Burma. The design is called “amtosa” although deceptively simple is really extremely complex; please note in enlargements that the reverse side of this textile does not show any of the pattern on the front. This is made on a backstrap loom of very fine homespun cotton with a beaded open work border along the selvedge. Three small repaired holes. L: 1.8m/6ft and W: 40.5cm/16in.

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from hemp fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics...

Beautiful hand-woven hem from a woman’s skirt from the Tai Moei ethnic group of Sam Neua Province, Laos. This piece is only about 30 years old but the colors in the silk threaded center field are absolutely gorgeous. This piece is still sewn together and in excellent condition. H: 43.cm/17in and W: 59cm/23in (x2).

Luscious all hand spun and woven with gold threads, panel from a vintage Varanasi, Indian wedding sari, circa 60 to 70 years old. I would describe the colors as pigeon blood ruby red with subtle gentian floral scrolls intermingled with the gold thread medallions, which I might add is made of genuine low karat gold metal. This is double backed on cotton and silk with a “raw” silk border and polyester end trims...

Good small copper alloy Buddha from Japan, circa post WW II, 1950s. This probably was meant to be in a small portable shrine. The body was cast separate from the nimbus- there is a slight crimp on one side which may be noted as an irregular edge in enlargements. This was made in the typical Chinese Tang style, a good example of how Japan assimilated and refined foreign cultural influences. H: 9cm/3.5in.

Elegant ebony wood carving of a Balinese beauty circa 1960 to 1970- possibly older. This was obviously created for the tourist market and panders to the Western ideal of the female form of the time. I traveled to Bali in the 80s and 90s and found their arts and crafts leaning more to the impressionist side, where figures looked like the Navi from Avatar. Given its hardness and cost, ebony is usually only given to master craftsman to carve from...

Fine woman’s full length, three paneled tube sarong from Ende, Flores Island, Indonesia. This has been my possession since 1988 when I made a trip through Indonesia to study their arts and crafts, it was old when I bought and has remained in storage since then so I reckon this piece is at least 60 years old, possibly more. Although not as well known as Sumbanese and Ibanic ikat, the intricacy of the pattern and fine quality of the weave are more abstract and far superior...

Fine and rare four paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people, Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are polyester and commercial white thread while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo. There is some minor even fraying at the bottom and a few negligible small holes...

These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. The colored threads in the brocaded panel are a combination of silk, cotton, and polyester while the rest of the skirt is hand spun cotton and indigo in an abstract and zoomorphic design. These kinds of textiles are unique among Chinese minority weavings as they combine supplementary weft brocade and tie dye ikat techniques. Exceptionally fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern. As I am assuming that goat hair has similar smell to sheep’s wool when wet, so most likely this is dog. This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece...

Rare strand of “drum” shaped white glass beads from the Naga ethnic group Assam, India, strung on hand made hemp cord. These are old beads and will date them conservatively pre 1950, please note the two round shaped beads are Chinese “Peking” glass beads 19th century. A few have chips but 90% are in excellent condition. Total length 68cm/27in, please note these are all the same size (scale in enlargements is metric).

Very rare “letter” purse woven from bamboo from the Karen ethnic group along the Thai/Burma border. Before the advent of plastic bags and Velcro items such as these were treasured labor intensive daily necessities. This is a semi antique- circa 60 to 80 years old made from all natural materials and is designed to make it as waterproof as possible...

Rare (one of a kind), semi antique basket from the Naxi/Nakhi ethnic group in Yunnan province. I purchased this in 2001 at a local market in Lijiang (now a UNESCO heritage site). Constructed of bamboo with much of lacquer intact, this piece is circa 50 to 80 years old, most interesting is an auspicious coin symbol woven into the top...

Good West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered fanciful animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region. No damage, some light fading may be noted in the reddish areas of the first enlarg...

Rare semi antique supplementary warp silk embroidery on handspun indigo cotton, blanket from the diverse Tai ethnic group Vietnam/Laos. I collected this in Chiang Mai around 12 years ago and would date it around 40 to 80 years old. Nowadays you just can’t find this sort of textile anymore. Some embroidery losses and a hole along the edge (noted in enlargements) but overall in very good condition. Dimensions: 84cm/33in x 145cm/57in.

Fine and rare old Yao/Mien all hand spun and woven cotton wedding veil with silk thread embroidered geometrical design, circa 50 years old. This piece is from Kim Mien group and was originally collected in Northern Laos. The colors on this piece are subtle and restrained (please note the use of shades of brown and blue in enlargements) and the brown and white tassels. Except for a couple of tiny holes this piece is in excellent condition. W: 47cm/18.5in and L: 75cm/29.5in.
