Lovely and simple, Burmese jade heart with big splash of Apple Green color. Deserves a gold loop but I have strung it on an adjustable chord with two coral toggle beads. H: 30.5mm x 25.6mm (thickness 4.8mm). This is about 30 years old, originally acquired from and old jade dealer in HK going out of business- given it’s age it will retain it’s color and is not dyed. Rare and unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from bast fiber (possibly hemp), the reddish head ends have an animal hair weft, either goat or dog. There are a few areas that have a bright colored commercial yarn but other then that all natural dyes. In the red field there are some bits of missing weft noted in enlargements. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely old an old piece...

Very fine old wool pangden cloth- all hand spun wool and natural dyes. This piece is an exceptionally large piece consisting of 5 panels, circa 40 to 50 years old. I have had quite a few of these in the past and this is one of best I have seen. The weave is very tight and heavy and would make an excellent small blanket or throw rug. In the past these were worn by married women, but these days they are a fashion accoutrement for the modern Tibetan woman...

Pictorial men’s body cloth from the Naga, in Burma. I acquired this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in the late 90’s. All handspun cotton and mostly natural dyes- the embroidery may be a later add on, the blanket itself is supple and has had some use. This piece was probably made for the tourist market back then but with creative typical Naga designs. There are a few weak areas in the weave but no holes or tears. L: 170cm/66in and W: 107cm/42in.

Lao blanket, acquired in the Northern most province of Phongsaly, 2002, from a small local market. I was told it was Akha but am really not sure as I have no references on textiles from this group. This all hand woven with handspun thread except for the turquoise and possibly red the dyes are natural. L 180cm/70in and 100cm/39.5in. Nice heavy weave no damage.

Excellent, circa 1950s, 3 paneled weaving from the Zhuang ethnic group in Guangxi Zhuang, Southern China. The body is woven from very fine handmade cotton thread while the weft supplementary embroidery is done with silk floss threads (the small blue indigo medallions are done with cotton). Quite a heavy piece because of all the embroidery. L: 161cm/63in and W: 100cm/39in.

Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way...

Exceptionally rare woman’s shoulder cloth most likely from the Khami, Khuni or Mro Chin subgroups living in the Rakhine and Chin states, west Myanmar. Please note that the pattern is hand embroidered on one side only and not woven in, also most of the geometric woven patterns are unique with only a couple of repetitions. The dimensions are L: 123cm/63in x W: 34cm/13.5in. I have three books and Burmese textiles and there are no depicted examples of pictorial weaves...
