Rare and unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from bast fiber (possibly hemp), the reddish head ends have an animal hair weft, either goat or dog. There are a few areas that have a bright colored commercial yarn but other then that all natural dyes. In the red field there are some bits of missing weft noted in enlargements. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely old an old piece...

Pictorial men’s body cloth from the Naga, in Burma. I acquired this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in the late 90’s. All handspun cotton and mostly natural dyes- the embroidery may be a later add on, the blanket itself is supple and has had some use. This piece was probably made for the tourist market back then but with creative typical Naga designs. There are a few weak areas in the weave but no holes or tears. L: 170cm/66in and W: 107cm/42in.

Lao blanket, acquired in the Northern most province of Phongsaly, 2002, from a small local market. I was told it was Akha but am really not sure as I have no references on textiles from this group. This all hand woven with handspun thread except for the turquoise and possibly red the dyes are natural. L 180cm/70in and 100cm/39.5in. Nice heavy weave no damage.

Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions. I have not seen any more of these during the past 15 odd years of my usual buying trips. This weaving is a vanishing craft and quite possibly no longer being made in the traditional way...

Exceptionally rare woman’s shoulder cloth most likely from the Khami, Khuni or Mro Chin subgroups living in the Rakhine and Chin states, west Myanmar. Nice old large black and red lacquered Cambodian box with basketry side. Most arts and crafts were destroyed during the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror and are just starting to make a comeback. This piece is circa 1950s or earlier with one old repair done to the side (see last 2 enlargements). These are very rare nowadays- I bought this piece in the “Russian Market”, Phnom Pehn about 20 years ago and even then they were difficult to come by. D: 29.5cm/11.3in and H: 17cm/6.8in.

One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. I have never seen one these before- possibly used as knife in symbolic blood letting rituals where the shaman cuts out “evil” from his patient. Probably about 30 year old this is a lovely abstract interpretation of a Scaly Anteater. L: 13cm/5.2in.

Rare blanket from the Khami/Mro ethnic group, Burma. This is made from all handspun cotton and natural dyes and is quite unusual in that it is composed of 5 panels. There is one small hole (noted in enlargements) and moderate staining. L: 1.4m/4ft 7in. W: 1.9m/6ft 2in. I bought this in the late 1990s so at least pre 1980 vintage weaving.
