Superbly detailed, large multi colored, “eight days a week” zodiac box. This piece is in excellent condtion, save for one small chip on lid noted in enlargement #9. This one was produced in Kyaukka, Sagaing District circa 1950. The highly polished effect was created by the application of tung oil on the surface (reference: Lacquerware Journeys- Than Htun)...

Nice old antique black lacquered bamboo and wood box from Cambodia circa 1950 or earlier. This part of a collection I acquired almost 20 years ago. Khmer lacquer is quite rare, not many crafts survived the Khmer Rouge era, and is a lost art. Some wear and restoration as to be expected but no major damage. D: 5cm/7.8in and H: 10.5cm/4.1in.

Nice old large black and red lacquered Cambodian box with basketry side. Most arts and crafts were destroyed during the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror and are just starting to make a comeback. This piece is circa 1950s or earlier with one old repair done to the side (see last 2 enlargements). These are very rare nowadays- I bought this piece in the “Russian Market”, Phnom Pehn about 20 years ago and even then they were difficult to come by. D: 29.5cm/11.3in and H: 17cm/6.8in.

Complete set of five Shan esoteric Buddhist images. These consist of a Buddha, three monks and a chedi. These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. They have a quirky abstract quality to them, their facelessness represents that the individual is inconsequential but has the potential for becoming a Buddha, on the bottom are the eight Burmese zodiac symbols based on the days of the week...
