Quite unusual are the “Sahnka” symbols, conch, rarely seen in carpets- this represents the sound of the Dharma-beckoning people to awaken from ignorance. Exc...

Rare Ningxia Tibetan Buddhist altar hanging rug. Dating is difficult on this piece due its near pristine condition, so conservatively I will say this pre 1960. The style, quality of weaving and colors indicate a much older piece (circa 19th century). W: 158cm/62in and L: 151cm/59in. This has classic Buddhist imagery- the central floral medallion represents the Buddhist Wheel of Law (Darmachakra)- 8 spokes symbolizing the Eightfold Path, next to it are a deer and trees which repre...

Late 19th century, large, Shan/Tai Yai Buddha. There is a crack on the shoulder and arm, a couple of chips on the base and minor loss to lacquer- but over all this has an ethereal expression, unique to Shan images. There is a dedication incised on the back, usually this name of individual who commissioned the making of it as act of Buddhist merit making. H: 80cm/33in and W: (at base) 23cm/9.2in.

Graceful Tang pottery wall tile depicting a flying celestial angel “Feitian”. It has been broken and not very well repaired (ergo the low price). Having said this, it is a stunning image of a Heavenly Angel flying amidst the clouds. L: 32.5cm/12.8in, W: 16.5cm/6.5in and thickness: 4cm/1.5in.

Ensemble of 4 Lanna Thai Buddhist reading implements (analogous to a Yad Torah Pointer). Used to mark pages and point out words while reciting a sutra from a Buddhist manuscript, i.e. individual pages sandwiched between two small wooden planks. The one with most vivid gold looks to have been re lacquered- circa 50 to 90 years old. Check enlargements for size.

4047 200.00 Complete set of five Shan esoteric Buddhist images. These consist of a Buddha, three monks and a chedi. These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. They have a quirky abstract quality to them, their facelessness represents that the individual is inconsequential but has the potential for becoming a Buddha, on the bottom are the eight Burmese zodiac symbols based on the days of the week. ...

Rare, circa early 20th century carved wooden mask designed to be placed on or above a door to ward off evil spirits, in the animist Taoist tradition. This was made by a minority ethnic group in Southern China (Miao or Tujia) and is similar in style to Nuo masks although this was never meant to be worn. H: 42.5cm/16.8 in and W: 29cm/11.5in. This is a veryimpressive piece with a fierce demeanor. The nose is damaged with a minor crack and the odd bug hole, here and there.

Good Tang Dynasty gray clay brick depicting “Atlas” type figure seated on a lotus blossom I was in Taxila once and saw similar figures which to my mind illustrates the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. This is painted with “stucco”, and in good condition with no damage. W: 14.5cm/5.8in and H: 17.7cm/7in.

Very rare post Khmer Buddha, circa 16th century, small standing Buddha displaying with uncommon “namaskara” mudra. The head broke from the neck (and subsequently repaired- see enlargements) off revealing a ceramic core and the most of the robe on the left side is missing. Lovely patina. This piece will stand on its own but I do suggest that it be propped up or fixed onto something. H: 13.5cm/5.2in.

Quirky “Budai”circa Qing Dynasty, possibly much earlier. This is a high fired pottery molded piece. Stylistically this figure hasn’t changed much since the Song Dynasty so precise dating is difficult. This is an excavated piece as evidenced by traces of soil in the folds of the robe, and has a similar glaze to Jizhou but without the expected craquelure- quite possibly this Shekwan piece emulating a Song glaze. In excellent condition-H: 12.9cm/5in and W: 9.4cm/3.7in.

80.00 Quirky big round ball of green glass; possibly sand cast- this would have been used to make a Buddha image, from Lanna culture, Northern Thailand. In the 1950s the Japanese started exporting mold cast glass images to Thailand and Laos so this practice died out around then. There is a Buddha in there waiting to be realized. Looks like one of moons of Jupiter. Weight 210grams D: 5.5cm/2.2in.

Tibetan Buddhist “windhorse” woodblock with loads of auspicious symbols (trigrams, dorjes etc) for printing small prayer flags about 40 to 50 years old, still perfectly usable (I’ve thought of making cards with this but never got around to it). The “wind horse” has its origins the earlier Bon folk religion but has been incorporated to Tantric art for the past couple of hundred years. I’ve researched few of interpretations of this symbol, which are quite complex so suf...
