Very fine and rare underglazed blue and white porcelain jar with lid, from the Southern Yunnan Kiln of Yuxi. This type of ceramic is a fairly recent discovery, the first pieces having hit the market around 2003, although the earliest dating to having found this kind of ware was 1973. The best dating I can give this given its simple design would be late Yuan to early Ming, circa the 12th century, although ceramics from this area have been produced from the Song to Late Ming. Rare and unusual shallow bowls enclosed in pewter. The original blank dishes were imported from Japan and then decorated in Hong Kong. By the 1980s this trade died out due to rising property costs as well as the transitioning of the Hong Kong manufacturing sector to China. This pair is in excellent condition and perfectly matched with floral panels and medallions. These are also the only examples I have seen jacketed in pewter. D: 17cm/6.9in and H: 4cm/1.6in. Dated to 1970’s.
