Fine and rare skirt group from the Li ethnic (Run speaking dialect) group Hainan Island. I acquired this piece on a trip to Hainan Island in 1987. This is composed of three panels- the upper one is an all natural dye geometric pattern, the center one is quite interesting, incorporating both the mother/son motif as well as a “Hercules” and anthropomorphic design- the lower panel is a zoomorphic design (possibly deer?). The backing is quite stiff- most likely linen or a bast thread and except for the bright yellow and some red most of the dyes appears to be natural. Perfect condition. H: 72cm/28in and L: 64cm/25in length. See last enlargement for a couple of cute Li girls wearing similar heirloom skirts.
