Ebony heartwood sculpture of Bodhidharma, known locally as Da Mo and Daruma in Japan, was Buddhist monk of possibly central Asian origin, who is said to have been the founder of the Chan (Zen) Buddhist sect in China as well as the Shaolin Kung Fu Monastery. I acquired this at a charity sale at a Buddhist church, raising money for scholarships to underprivileged students in China. This piece is very well carved. If you follow the grain of the wood you can see where this is incorporated into the sculpture to accentuate the features of the face and the robe. Probably carved 1980s it is signed at the bottom and has some minor checks in the back. Very heavy~ H: 32cm/12.5in.
