Very fine niello inlay silver box Buddhist themed depiction of the Royal Barge on the Chao Phraya River floating past Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) flanked by apsaras on the lid and burlwood interior. The front reads “To Admiral Sir David Luce with best wishes from Admiral (signed) Chammarnand Layndvla, Bangkok, 5, January 1962”. Possibly given as a diplomatic going away gift, in 1960 Sir David Luce was appointed Commander-in-chief Far East, and was promoted to First Sea Lord 1963. The bottom is stamped with a “Thainakon Sterling Thailand”, hall mark. There is some minor pitting and tarnishing but overall in excellent condition with no dents or major scratches.
