Unique bast fiber blanket from Malipo, Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Wenshan County, Yunnan China near Vietnam. The border is composed of a bast fiber warp and weft: either hemp or “huo cao” fireweed. The center panels seems to be cotton but may incorporate some hemp as well but it is difficult to for me to tell as I have seen some very soft hemp cloth in the past. This piece is two ply and was probably used as a duvet type bed cover as you could either stuff it with it insulating materials or other blankets as needed. Everything on this piece is hand made with natural dyes. It is surprisingly heavy and hard wearing. Given the availability of modern cloth and the migration of labor to the urban areas, I seriously doubt if anything like this is being made today anymore. Dating is difficult so 50 years or older seems reasonable to me. This is in good condition. W: 59cm/23in and L: 178cm/70in.
