Fine and rare Minangkabau song bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 60 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics. This trap has two compartments, the rear compartment holds a female which entices a male inside the front compartment and when he steps on the lever the fish net door goes down and he’s trapped! Made of bits of ply wood, bamboo and string- an ingenious native contraption. L: 25.5cm/9.8in, W: 16cm/6.5in and H: 22cm/8.6in (front) 14cm/5.5in(rear)
