Exceptionally fine and rare three paneled ikat blanket from the Li people of Hainan Island, Southwest China. The lighter wide indigo bands consists a coarse warp fiber most likely linen or hemp and the narrow brown and dark blue indigo bands are made of a thinner and softer thread, probably cotton or cotton and bast fiber mix. In near perfect condition, there is one tiny pinhole and minor dark staining (this could also be a form a brash) on the inside- please see last enlargement. I have had a few Li blankets over the years and this the only I have seen with an indigo ikat construction. A similar pattern can be seen amongst the men’s jackets of the Ha speaking group although they are not ikat. L: 218cm/86in and W: 110cm/42.5in. This made from all handspun thread and natural dye- circa mid 20th century.
