Rare Northern Song Dynasty, porcelaneous saucer with abstract incised floral medallion. This is a Qingbai type, produced at Jingdezhen which, at the time was trying to replicate the Ding wares from the Northern Kilns. This has an ivory colored glaze with a green tint. The Southern Ding classification is fairly recent. In the past very high quality pieces porcelaneous, off white pieces surfaced from time to time but no one was really sure where to put them. The clay on this piece has almost no impurities and the presence of glaze on the very shallow footrim and lack of glaze on the mouthrim indicate this was fired upside down. There are a few tiny “ant bite” sized frits and chips on the mouthrim, highlighted in enlargement 5 but otherwise good condition. D: 11cm/4.3in and H: 1.6cm/0.6in.
