Unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from heavy coarse cotton or bast fiber (possibly hemp) with softer cotton tufts. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely an old piece. The Rawang are an upland people living in some of the most remote areas of northernmost Burma. I acquired about 20 years ago in Mae Sai, Northern, Thailand, possibly brought down by the Rawang Christian Diaspora, fleeing persecution at the hands of the Burmese government. At the time there were a few pieces available in Chiang Mai and Bangkok for about a year. Since then nothing new has appeared on the market. There is one damaged corner and numerous tufts missing- of interest to specialist collectors. L: 1.94cm W: 79cm.
