Exceptionally fine and rare Khmer black lacquer “pillow box” with an abstract floral pattern. Definitely an old pre Khmer Rouge piece, dating 40 to 50 years old, possibly more. The unique decoration makes this a one of a kind piece, the construction is typically Cambodian in that it is constructed with thin small planks of wood and is coated with raw lacquer on the bottom, not to mention this was actually purchased several years ago in Cambodia, the attention to detail on the design is superb. Like an extinct species, the craft of making lacquer utilitarian items died out in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge’s brutal regime although the there has been a revival of ceremonial mask making and tourist export items. There is some wear and a minor crack on one corner that may be seen enlargements. L: 20.3cm/8in x W: 6.4cm/2.5in and H: 10.2cm/4in.
