Taos Indian Pueblo located in Norther Mexico was built centuries ago. This pueblo is a classic example of a multi-level dwelling. Thick vegas (beams) were laid in the ceilings of each dwelling to support the tremendous weight of the adobe (mud bricks). Notice the deck of windows - ventilation was poor but the nature of the adobe is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Outside ladders were used to go from level to level. The blue doors were thought to keep out evil spirits. The foreground shows the oven used for baking bread and the rocks on the high poles were used (and still are) to dry and preserve food. 53cm x 18cm x 11cm
