This fiercely medieval style tokkuri was made by Echizen standout Nishiura Takashi (b.1941) and in form and surface it is everything that classic modern Echizen is about. Using indigenous Echizen clay, local woods and firing a distinctly traditional Echizen kiln, Nishiura creates works that are in direct lineage back to the medieval times while adding his own voice to both form and surface. This tokkuri has a pleasantly fullness to the form and is finished in a wonderful array of wood fired affe...

Bold and powerful te-oke form by Mashiko veteran potter, Takauchi Shugo (b. 1937). Roughly thrown, Takauchi then hacked away vertical channels down the form adding dimension to the pot and disrupting the thrown marks that encircle the vase which stands as a quintessential form by this potter. The aggressive handle has incised decoration which is also highlighted by settles deep green Oribe glaze with bidoro style drips hanging perpetually beneath the device. Rich, almost volcanic deep red Shino chawan by multi-talented potter, Matsuzaki Ken. This large chawan has a tremendous amount of character and movement with a surface that resembles the Enbu work of Yamada Kazu though made before it was premiered. The thick, unctuous surface has a wonderful feel in the hand and is potently juxtaposed against the crimson red of the base glaze. This is a rather exhilarating bowl at a fraction of his contemporaries and his gallery prices.
